What is the value of ICF or EMCC certification for a professional coach?
By Ludovic Rérolle · Founder, Follow Lab
Many coaches wonder whether to pursue certification. Is it worth getting certified? What will it bring me? Is it worth the investment? How do you choose between ICF and EMCC?
Let's explore the topic, with the expertise of Noëmie Brun, a certified coach for more than 8 years and coaching trainer at Activision Coaching Institute, accredited by ICF (Paris – Lyon – Toulouse).

Professional coaching in full transformation
With the rise of platforms and remote coaching, coaching is becoming more accessible.
The professional coaching market is growing by +25%*, but fees are falling.
With AI, conversational bots trained in coaching are emerging, raising the risk of automating part of the market.
In this context, it is crucial to differentiate yourself.
Adopting a follow-up tool like Follow Lab PRO to guarantee clients a highly professional, structured coaching experience is a strong differentiator, but that is not our topic today... Let's talk about certifications instead.
What are the benefits of obtaining certification?
The figures:*
- Certified coaches charge 30% to 50% more than non-certified coaches
- 70% of clients say they are willing to pay more for a certified coach
Client trust:
Certifications (ICF, EMCC) are a mark of seriousness and professionalism. They reassure clients about the quality of your training, your practice, and your adherence to recognized standards.
For many companies, being certified will be an essential prerequisite to bid on an opportunity or get a hearing.
International recognition:
These certifications are recognized worldwide (ICF) or across Europe (EMCC). If that matters to you, it makes it easier to access international assignments.
Ethical framework and supervision:
Each certifying body offers an ethical framework that you can display in your communications and service contracts. It protects your practice and establishes the framework for your coaching programs.
Regular supervision is strongly encouraged (ICF) or even mandatory (EMCC). Individually or in a group, supervision lets you step back from your practice, question yourself, and grow as a coach.
Continuous professional development and access to a professional network:
ICF and EMCC offer members a range of training programs and events that help you stay up to date and evolve in your profession.
You gain access to a peer community that breaks the often solitary nature of the job and lets you share discussions, resources, and even opportunities.
ICF, EMCC: what are the differences?
ICF is a global organization, originally American, focused exclusively on coaching. Its philosophy is strongly oriented toward structured professional practice, so the certification process is very strict (accredited training, client experience, audio recordings + assessment, mentoring with a certified coach), and the certification is particularly recognized in the corporate world internationally. Renewal is required every 3 years.
EMCC is a European organization focused on coaching and mentoring. Its philosophy is more reflective, inclusive, and holistic, so the certification process is more flexible (portfolio demonstrating skills, reflexivity, and continuous development), and the certification is particularly recognized in the public sector, social services, education, and healthcare.
